Description

Laurel Dewey, who DailyLit readers have now met through her stories An Unfinished Death and You Can’t Judge a Book By Its Cover, is a uniquely powerful suspense writer who has created an affecting and unforgettable recurring character in Jane Perry. Readers have responded passionately to Jane’s combination of raw intensity, surprising vulnerability, and professional brilliance. All of this is on display in Dewey’s short fiction, five original pieces of which DailyLit is offering one-per-month, leading up to the release of Dewey’s first novel, Protector in paperback in February 2010.

For this third Jane Perry story, “Anonymous,” Dewey takes us just past the events in Protector to tell of the beginning of a new life for the former Denver Police detective. Jane is working as a private investigator and attending AA meetings in an attempt to maintain her hard-fought sobriety. After a meeting, she encounters a woman with a harrowing story to tell—and a mystery that runs far deeper than Jane at first realizes.

Opening Lines (Experimental)

My name is Jane Perry and I’m an alcoholic.
As I write that, it doesn’t feel like it belongs to me yet. I’m three months sober so I’ll get another goddamn chip at the meeting tomorrow night. Can’t wait. The fucking thing can rattle around in the left pocket of my jeans and keep the other ...

Here I go again, polishing my praise stick (schtick) for Dewey, she's so terrific, a disappearing act within a disappearing act, another terrific short story. This woman is good, her stories are terrific, her characterizations concise and accurate, her prose addictive. Love it, love her writing. I can't recommend her highly enough.

AA hell for Jane

Jane becomes a P.I., and joins AA to get her life on an even keel. Not everyone is doing so well though. She meets someone who's been waiting a long time to not be anonymous, one for whom it may be a matter of life or death.
