A wry tale of posturing and clerical politics—and one very overbearing wife named Mrs. Proudie—in nineteenth century England.
Description
In Anthony Trollope’s 1857 Barchester Towers, the entire town of Barchester is a-twitter over who will be its next bishop. The residents all imagine that Archdeacon Grantly, the son of the late bishop, will take his father’s place. However, to everyone’s surprise, someone new to town, a politically connected man named Mr. Proudie, is named as the new bishop of Barchester. The very traditional citizens are dismayed at this unexpected shake-up and, to further ruffle their already tousled feathers, they soon realize that Mr. Proudie’s wife is an unusually outspoken woman with a strong role in her husband’s decisions. Disapproving of this turn of events, the town turns a cold shoulder to the Proudies, but, in the end, must brace itself for even more dramatic changes. As Barchester is turned upside down, drama and intrigue make for a fascinating look at the political and spiritual life of a tight-knit community.
