Description

In this, his last work, Russian master Fyodor Dostoevsky tells the story of one family torn apart by greed, jealousy, and tragedy. Fyodor Pavlovich is a poor father: he's never shown an interest in any of his sons, preferring to spend his time chasing his fortune and the young women of his town. When Dmitri, Fyodor's eldest son, returns to the village, Fyodor is in pursuit of Grushenka—with whom Dmitri is also in love, despite being engaged to another woman. Although the youngest son Aloysha attempts to mediate the dispute, Fyodor and Dmitri's argument appears to spiral out of control. Meanwhile, Ivan, the third brother, has fallen in love with Katerina, the very woman to whom Dmitri is engaged. To free himself of his duty to Katerina—and resolve at least some of his family's disputes—Dmitri sets out to find the 3000 rubles he must pay her. And when Fyodor Pavlovich turns up robbed of 3000 rubles and dead, all eyes turn to Dmitri. The resolution of this twisted family saga will haunt you long after the story ends.

About the Author

From the background of a difficult childhood and a lifelong compassion for the suffering of those around him, Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) came to write novels that delve into the mysteries of the psyche. Throughout his works, which include The Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and Notes From the Underground, whether writing of men or women, rich or poor, benevolent or criminal, Dostoevsky seeks to explore and question the desires, fears, and hopes that characterize the human experience.
