Description

A woman-falls-in-love-with-dog story, set in the Big Apple

A woman meets an amber-eyed, sixty-pound boxer in a city park and falls in love. Their first year honeymoon was a discovery of each other's idiosyncrasies (morning dog or evening dog? Television watcher or reader?). Then life settles into routine and the once rebelliously high-spirited, independent woman and her bilingual comedian of a dog realize that they're "happily stuck with each other." In this witty, sharp memoir, Louise Bernikow charts eight years with Libro the boxer as they travel through Manhattan . . . and that thing called Life. From book tours to beach houses, from Libro's training as pet therapist after 9/11 to his escapades on the campaign trail, Louise plays "Jack" to Libro's "Jackie." But as Louise all too soon discovers, the stray she rescued is domesticating her. A book about a modern family of two, about joy and grief, and realizing that the life you've made (even if it doesn't include a wedding ring) is more than enough, Dreaming in Libro will bring a wagging tail to any reader.

Praise for Dreaming in Libro:

"In Dreaming in Libro, Louise Bernikow becomes the woman her dog always knew she could be from the moment he first laid eyes on her. Sharply observed, beautifully written, and bursting at the seams with two big hearts—one human and one canine. I couldn't put it down!"
—Claire Cook, author of Must Love Dogs and Life's a Beach

"To call the story of a woman and her dog a great love story might sound odd to some; just read this book and you'll instantly understand. A beautiful portrait of New York, the writing life, the 'single' life, and most of all, the magic that is living with a dog. Dreaming in Libro touched my heart and filled it with joy."
—Alison Pace, author of Pug Hill

"Anyone who loves animals will surely appreciate this book which celebrates the friendship—or is it love?—between a dog and a woman. Funny, self-revealing, sometimes sad, this is the touching and eminently readable story of a love affair."
—Michael Korda, author of Horse People

Opening Lines (Experimental)

My mother always told me I would grow into my feet and my nose. Either she was mistaken or she downright lied because here I am grown up, all five feet three inches of me and when I ask for size nine shoes, salespeople gape. But the shoes do fit. My nose is as prominent as it was when my mother ...
