BASIC EXPRESSIONS

Everything you need to meet and greet in Spanish.
- say hello and good-bye
- ask what's up
- get someone's attention

MAKE THE FIRST MOVE

Tired of the plain "Hola"? Try these other ways to say hello.

¿Cómo andas?
[How're you doing?]
(Say it with a fresh, relaxed attitude.)

¡Quiubo!
[What's going on?]
(It's the shortened form of "¿Qué hubo?" Say it in one quick shot.)

¡Quiay!
[What's up?]
(This is the fast way to say "¿Qué hay?")

¿Entonces qué?
[What's happening?]
(Use with your close friends, exclusively.)

¿Qué onda?
[What's up?]
(Very Mexican, but sounds cool everywhere.)

¿Cómo van las cosas?
[How's it going?]
(Informal, but still polite.)

THE SCOOP

It is very unusual for young Latinos to shake hands when greeting or being introduced. They prefer to gently hit fists. Sometimes, a friendly glance or a slight nod is enough. Kissing on the cheek (on both cheeks for Argentineans and Spaniards) is also very common, but never between guys, with the exception of Argentineans, Chileans, and Uruguayans. In all other countries, close male friends--at the most--hug warmly, especially when they haven't seen each other for a while.
