Description

Laurel Dewey, who first appeared on DailyLit in An Unfinished Death, is a uniquely powerful suspense writer who has created an affecting and unforgettable character in Denver Police Detective Jane Perry. Readers have responded passionately to Jane’s combination of raw intensity, surprising vulnerability, and professional brilliance. All of this is on display in Dewey’s short fiction, five original pieces of which DailyLit is offering one-per-month, leading up to the release of Dewey’s first novel, Protector, in February 2010.

For the second Jane Perry story, "You Can’t Judge a Book By Its Cover," Dewey has chosen to give Jane her own blog. Allowing Jane to speak directly to readers, Dewey tells the tale of a presentation Jane gives to schoolchildren (the kind of thing she hates doing), the unusual boy she meets there, and the shocking connection she makes with him.

Opening Lines (Experimental)

I want to be upfront with everyone who is reading this blog. I had to be talked into writing it. You see, I’m a very private person and I’m not someone who readily opens myself up to others. I’ve always been like that since I was a kid. When somebody showed a passing interest in me or in my ...

Fans of cop stories, read the book.

This story contains a witty mix of humor and drama.
Warning: contains profanity and graphic descriptions of crime scenes.

Detective Jane Perry rocks!

Laurel Dewey's character, Jane Perry is gritty, funny, compelling -- and addicting! Mixing the metaphysical into a crime story is a great twist. Thanks DailyLit for introducing me to Laurel Dewey. I'm on my way to my local bookstore to stock up.

Original and compelling

I really liked the way this story flowed. It was certainly a fast read. I had no idea where it was going to go and when it went really dark at the end, it was kind of shocking. But it's another one of those good reads that keeps you thinking long after you've finished the story. You really CAN'T judge a book by its cover, can you??

Another great read from Dewey

Wow! Loved it! Fast read and powerful story. I really appreciate Detective Jane Perry's "voice" and her directness to the reader. The honesty in which Jane Perry tells her story is sometimes jarring but never boring. It was an interesting approach to write a "blog" in the voice of a fictional character. I don't think that's been done before. Look forward to future offerings from Dewey and her great main character!
