Description

Leaves of Grass is a groundbreaking collection of poems by nineteenth century poet Walt Whitman. An early free spirit, Whitman was inspired to put what he felt was the voice of the American everyman onto paper. Even though the public's initial response to Whitman's powerful and unconventional verse was less than favorable, great minds of his day, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Abraham Lincoln, were some of this collection's first admirers. A work that evolved and grew through several editions, Whitman's Leaves of Grass is a must-read for those seeking a uniquely American voice whose energy and freshness leaps from the page.

About the Author

Walt Whitman (1819-1892) played a vital role in the shaping of the American poetic voice. A poet, essayist, and journalist, Whitman was an unconventional figure in life and in legend. From his humble origins in a large and poverty-stricken family, Whitman found a place in the world of printing, becoming a printer's apprentice, and ultimately established his own newspaper in New York. Whitman's life's work is the famous Leaves of Grass, which began as a small poetry collection and found acclaim among European readers despite its unpopularity in America. Throughout his subsequent humanitarian and government work during the Civil War, Whitman continued to revise and update his poetry. Leaves of Grass as we have it today is Whitman's heartfelt and dedicated poetic contribution, one which has gone on to influence countless other writers around the world.

Oh Joy! Oh Thrill! I'm done! done! done!

In the celebratory style of Whitman: Oh Joy! Oh Thrill! I'm done! done! done! 423 poems, 15 months and finally finally done! Read this a "Poem a day" from DailyLit.com -- some thoughtful, others boring, some short, others too wordy. I would have given up except they kept arriving in my inbox and weren't difficult to read through. Realized about 90% through that I should have been reading more about Whitman and seeking critiques, etc. which would have added to the experience and probably would have raised the rating.
