Description
In Washington Irving’s classic 1820 tale The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, two men vie for the hand of the beautiful Katrina Van Tassel. Abraham Van Brunt, a dim-witted oaf, is sure that Katrina will choose him as a husband. His rival is an equally devoted but rather meek local schoolteacher named Ichabod Crane. One night, Katrina’s parents host a party at their home. Both men are sure that this will be their opportunity to win the heart of the lovely young lady. Their rivalry is bitter—both Ichabod and Abraham know that only one of them will emerge victorious. After the party’s end, however, neither man has yet won Katrina’s hand. As he makes his way home that evening, a chill runs down the spine of Ichabod Crane. Fast on his tail, barreling down the lane, someone is chasing him. To Ichabod’s horror, he sees that his pursuer is not Abraham at all. But who—or what—could it be? Hang on tight for a wild ride towards the thrilling conclusion of Irving’s beloved tale of terror.

Less spooky with aging?
A quick read through DailyLit.com -- not as spooky as I remember. I'll have to hunt up a copy to look at the Rackham illustrations.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
The writing of this story is wonderfully rich and his telling of it was chilling. It's wonderful how the superstitious hero (Ichabod Crane) is chilled by the legend of the Headless Horseman and then becomes a part of the legend himself.
Excellently exciting, even almost 200 years after it was written; this has stood the test of time and is filled with dark humour as well as psychological terror.
