Description

Here is the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood as told by the German masters of the fairy tale, the Brothers Grimm. Little Red Riding Hood, a sweet girl known for her scarlet red cape, is on her way to her grandmother’s house. Her grandmother is ill and the young girl has been sent to deliver food to her. As she walks through the forest, a dangerous wolf sees her and decides that the girl would make the perfect snack. He approaches her, and though she is initially startled, she naively informs the wolf of her destination. Following the wolf’s suggestion, she wanders from the path to pick some flowers, momentarily dawdling. This gives the wolf the chance to hurry ahead to her grandmother’s house, where he viciously ingests the grandmother and then disguises himself in her clothes, lying in wait for Little Red Riding Hood. When the girl arrives at the house, she notices that her grandmother looks different, but doesn’t recognize the wolf until her swallows her whole. Luckily, a hunter comes along who rescues the women, extracting them from the wolf’s belly—and allowing them to hatch a plan. This cautionary tale has become timeless and will please readers for generations to come.

About the Author

Jakob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859) Grimm were born into a comfortable German family, enjoying a genteel rural lifestyle in their earliest years. When their father suddenly died, however, the Grimm children and their mother were forced to leave their home and move into a smaller house in the city. Overcoming their family's hardships, the brothers went on to attend the University of Marlburg, where both studied law. It was during this phase of their lives that the Grimms began a project to amass ancient folk legends and stories of Germany. This singular endeavor would become the Grimms' beloved multi-volume set of Fairy Tales. Having established a solid reputation with these collected tales, both brothers became university professors, pursuing work in the field of linguistics. In addition to their most famous work, the brothers Grimm were also well known in their day for their passionate interest in politics and loyal devotion to the German democratic movement.
