Description
In 1284, or so the legend has it, rats were taking the village of Hamelin by storm. One day, an unusual man arrives in the midst of this plague. He claims to have a sure-fire solution, and the desperate townspeople promise him payment to rid them of the rats. The man, dressed in colorful, or "pied" clothes, pipes a tune that entrances the rats and sends them to the river to drown. The townspeople rejoice, but soon forget the Pied Piper's payment in their glee. Not one to be taken advantage of, the Piper quickly takes revenge. He uses his pipe's enchanting power to put the village children under its spell, leading them to danger by the river's edge, threatening to exact a grim toll unless he is paid for his work. Will the foolish villagers act in time to save their children from this mysterious stranger? The Pied Piper is an ancient folk tale whose origins are elusive, yet whose legacy persists firmly to this day.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin
Fun-crooked politicians and one survivor, a rat that writes; I have new appreciation reading this as an adult. I just wish more of Browning's poetry was on this site.
