Description

Laurel Dewey is a suspense writer with as much storytelling energy and raw emotional power as anyone writing today. Readers share this appraisal, writing rhapsodically about their experiences with her novels and their emotional connection with Dewey's unforgettable main character, Denver Police Detective Jane Perry. In fact, readers have continually commented that Jane Perry is one of the realest, most three-dimensional, unvarnished characters they've read, and a woman to whom they can truly relate. Beginning in October 2009, Laurel Dewey is publishing five uniquely powerful short works featuring Jane Perry. The first is this novelette, “An Unfinished Death.”

“An Unfinished Death” visits Jane during some of her darkest days, those preceding the period chronicled in her first novel, Protector. She’s drinking far too much and she’s involved in a toxic relationship with her boyfriend—a fellow cop—that is nothing like love. Coming off a particularly intense bender, she experiences a conversation with a man named Devinder Bashir that she can only describe as a hallucination. But when she gets to work, she learns that Bashir has just committed suicide, admitting to a long and shameful relationship with child pornography that has disgraced his parents and the wife he adores. The cop working the case seems satisfied to write it off as one more deviant doing away with himself. But something about the circumstances seems wrong to Jane, especially in light of the “conversation” she’d just had with Bashir. As Jane goes rogue to investigate the case, and as the visions of Bashir keep coming, Jane faces a confrontation with destiny that shakes her to her core.

Opening Lines (Experimental)

Jane wasn’t sure how long she’d been there or how she got to this place.
The last thing she remembered was finishing off a fifth of Jack Daniels with her younger brother Mike at her house around 1 A.M. after a three-day bender over the President’s Day holiday weekend. After sucking the last ...

Riveting storyline, sped up installments.

Unlikely heroes make this an interesting read. It was scary and ludicrous and I had to keep reading. However, I would not recommend this to any of my friends. I read way more than them, and they're quite particular.
Warning: sex and violence!

ONE OF THE BEST WRITERS OUT THERE

I've wondered for three years why author Laurel Dewey wasn't getting the mainstream attention she justly deserves. Dewey is an author who writes from the heart and has created an exciting, original, frustrating, intelligent, strong main character in Detective Jane Perry. I think it's fantastic that Daily Lit picked up her short stories and I can't wait to read them all. I've turned a lot of friends and family onto Dewey's books.

Can't wait to read more!
