For more than 100 years the Nobel Prize has recognized excellence in the fields of literature, physics, chemistry, peace, and medicine, and the strides made by Laureates in medicine have made humans the healthiest they’ve ever been. From Alexander Fleming and the discovery of penicillin to Francis Crick, the co-discoverer of the very blueprints for human life, DNA, these are people whose work has laid the foundation for modern medical care. And the tradition continues with more recent winners like Paul Lauterbur, who developed MRI technology used so widely—and so effectively—today. These are truly amazing achievements and as beings susceptible to disease and injury, each person on earth owes a debt of gratitude to these pioneers.
