Description
The wild and mysterious moors of Yorkshire are the setting for a passionate connection between childhood friends Catherine and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. Though they grow up and marry other people, theirs is a fierce love that cannot be tamed by the laws of society or cooled by the passage of time. Bronte's gothic tale explores the irresistible and dangerous nature of a love that knows no limits as it consumes the two people at its core.

About the Author
One dazzling novel, the 1847 Wuthering Heights, was all it took for Emily Bronte (1818-1848) to secure a legendary status among British writers. Together with sisters Anne and Charlotte, Emily was part of one of Britain's most famous literary families. A writer from the days of her childhood in the windswept expanse of the Yorkshire Moors, Emily Bronte is known for a captivating style that embodies the same spirit of untamed wildness and energy.

Shocking!
Having grown up with the names of Heathcliff & Cathy thrown about as a supposed romantic ideal, I was shocked to actually read this book and discover what a horrible character Heathcliff is. He is an absolute monster, completely evil. This is one twisted love story.
That said, I also really liked this book for the atmosphere, language, and period. It's never boring, and one can't imagine what will happen next.

Wuthering Heights & Gondal Poems: A Context
Emily Bronte seemed to be obsessed with what she called her Gondal Poems which she began collecting together in February 1844. This obsession continued right through the publication of Wuthering Heights in 1847 until May 1848. Her poems were about imaginary heroes and heroines and contained a vision of oneness. It was this vision that she sought to communicate in her poetry. These poems and their themes provided a retreat for Emily’s imagination, for her fantasy. They became a necessity for her life. They were a “benignant power” a “solacer of human cares” and a “brighter hope when hope despairs.” -Ron Price with thanks to Juliet Barker, The Brontes, Weidenfeld and Nicholson, 1994, pp.435-6.

TRAGICALLY INSPIRING
While this was a tragic love story..it was a love story all the same. I loved this book. It was no more tragic than Romeo and Juliet...another alltime great! Heathcliff may not be a traditional hero...in fact he was more of an ingrate at times... but the depth of the love he had for Catherine is what made him be revered as a hero. He loved her to no end! I LOVE the ending. Hareton is, in my eyes, the major hero of this story...and little Catherine. They rise above adversity!! Just an amazing book all around. Tragic but amazing!
