Book & Review Forums: 30 Stories in 30 Days
Worthless and Weird or Wonderfuly Weird?
I like intelligent, unusual stories - my favorite tv show is LOST. However, the weirdness needs to lead somewhere - I am not into being weird just for the sake of being weird. After 3 of these stories, I am already predicting their endings of death and weirdness. However, I have to admit that there is an addicting quality to the tales - they are told well. I can't decide if I want to keep reading them or not. They are kind of a mind trip, but if they are all going to conclude in an open ended way, I don't know if I want to read 30 of them. I was wondering what other people thought about theses stories.

3? I've only seen 2 so far. But I have enjoyed them both.

I've decided to stop reading them. They seem incoherant as though I'm intruding on someone's nightmare!

Empress - Be sure to avoid his longer works. They make the stories so far look like bedtime stories for toddlers.

Thanks, Golem100 and Empress for your replies. I have decided to read 10 of them, and if, they all end with death or no ending, then I figure that there will be little reason to continue - I'll always know that the characters will just get eaten or eventually killed. I kind of like the nightmare quality - especially around this time of year, but the predictability will get old.

I'm having a similar reaction. I'm beginning to ask myself what I've gained from having read these stories. I've just lost five minutes. I don't feel creeped out or enlightened or intrigued. I just feel irritated. I think 10 is a good sampling of what to expect so, like ebe321, I'll make my decision then.

I am fairly satisfied with the stories, though i don't believe they are truly "horror". They can be considered as "easy reading" for the road or coffee break. I have read 7 now, and they are not weird or strange too. But i find them amusing actually [something wrong with me?] I will keep reading and i'm having fun in doing so. Maybe because i was not expecting a very big horror, mystery .. etc, and i was not hoping to gain anything. But i don't think you need to read 10 :) if you simply don't like, just give up around 4-5, i think that will be enough.

I enjoy spending 5 minutes reading these stories. Especially story 4. I didn't recieve the first story. My subscription started with story 2. Why?

Hey Moderator<
Is David Wellington writing these stories just for the 30 Stories in 30 Days event (kinda like those stunts Harlan Ellison used to do)?Sep 28, 2009 4:47 pm

We found out there was a bad link at the end of the story "Boy." You can read the whole story here.Sep 28, 2009 7:40 pm

@Golem100: These stories were previously written by David Wellington (and not specifically for this particular event).

I really liked "18.9". The "science" behind it was intriguing - I wonder if there was any truth to it. The ending was actually one of the more positive ones - nobody get eaten. Maybe Subject D turned on the scientist and choked him to death or something. (I think that these stories may be warping me just a little.) Anyway, if Wellington has more like "18.9" I'll hang in there.

My post should read "nobody gets eaten." I couldn't figure out how to edit it - sorry.

I just read the first. Though weird, I think it is a good, quick read. About worthless or wonderful, well, that depends on the reader of anything. I enjoyed them. I thought it was nice in the beginning, dragged a bit toward the end (as much as a short story can drag). Can wait to read the rest.

Didnt understand the ending of "Barn". Can someone explain it to me?

OK, so who did the thing who wobbled back and forth on its tentacles eat? Did he eat the autistic son, Danny, or perhaps the underpaid, overworked, loyal secretary?

Moengey,
I was thinking that the man was showing the picture of his autistic son as sort of offering to the thing. In the story the man was sort of going over how his son had no quality of life and that he himself had helped others as a lawyer - this helped the man justify sacrificing the son. I think it was the son, but the secretary is a possibility. I'm kind of getting into these stories now ... they seem to be getting better! "Blink" was a great one.Oct 4, 2009 8:54 am

Ostroff,
I am not sure here either, but I think that the ending of"Barn" means that the creature in the woods actually summoned the man from the depths of darkness instead of the man calling it. So the creepy man was actually more sinister and to be feared more that the creature itself.Oct 4, 2009 9:00 am

Just read 18.9. Enjoyed it up until the ending. Sounds like the protagonist rediscovered the William Castle Sound of Horror. (pun intended)

Why do I keep reading these stories? I was actually feeling hopeful while reading "Uncle" - thinking that it might come to some other conclusion than death, but I was wrong. I wasn't even expecting a happy ending - just maybe that Dan could have walked away knowing that he had avoided a terrible situation. Anyway, I think that David Wellington is a talented writer, but too twisted for me. So I guess that I am saying"uncle" - I am done.

Give Laurel Dewey's short stories a try. I've started "An Unfinished Death" and if it's anything like her books, it's going to be very good. I love the realness and straight talking attitude of her main character, Detective Jane Perry.

I just signed up with Daily Lit when I found out about them serializing original short stories by Laurel Dewey. Thank you! Thank you!
I've read both Jane Perry novels (PROTECTOR and REDEMPTION) and devoured them. She has quickly become one of my top ten favorite writers. If you like your fiction gritty, creative, character-driven and thought-provoking, you too will LOVE Laurel Dewey's stories.
THANKS TO DAILY LIT FOR ADDING LAUREL DEWEY TO YOUR LIST OF WRITERS!!!!Oct 17, 2009 5:51 pm

I love these stories. 30 days of sick and twisted is about right, I think, especially around Halloween! After that it would just be too much death and destruction. :-)

@Melvis oh dear :-/ it would be great if the series ended on 31st Oct .. such a shame. I've never thought about it before but it would be perfect timing, and it'll always be on my mind now that i know :D
