I was wondering if anyone reading Moby Dick right now or even in the past has read Sena Jeter Naslund's book Ahab's Wife? I finished it a week or so ago, and I thought it was excellent.

I loved Ahab's Wife, from it's memorable opening sentence all the way to the end. A wonderful historical of the sea, Nantucket, and whaling. It's been a couple of years since I've read it, but it's spurred me on to a revisit to Nantucket, and the books March, American Bloomsbury, and the Scarlet Letter, all connected by Melville, Emerson, Hawthorne.

I am not familiar with the book but I am reading Moby Dick at the moment (up to part 175). Does it directly relate to Moby Dick and so should I wait until I have finished it before reading this?

I read it before finishing Moby Dick and still found I could follow it. I would definitely recommend you read it! I loved the book. Of course, I haven't checked in here in a while, and if you were at 175 more than a month ago, you must be getting close to being finished.

Yes! Less than 40 installments to go now.

The film was on tv a few weeks ago and I recorded it but I am determined not to watch it until I am finished with the book because whilst I want to watch the film again, I do not want it to colour my perception of the characters in the book.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will see if I can find the book.
