He hoped it would be a boy so that he could be sent to Yale College in Connecticut, at which institution Mr. Button himself had been known for four years by the somewhat obvious nickname of "Cuff."

Might be obvious...but not for me! I feel it implies Mr Button did not deserve to be in Yale, or something like that? Could someone explain?

it's just making fun of his name "button." like the buttons on the cuff (the part around your wrist) of a shirt. does that help? :)
