Book & Review Forums: Don Quixote

Terrible translation

This translation somehow manages to drain all the wit from Don Quixote. It's quite awful - reads like some public domain version translated by computer.

  • Sorry to hear that. It is an older translation, since the newer ones are not in the public domain. We will look into alternative translations -- suggestions welcome!

  • Any chance we could just get an original non translated version?

  • That's already available as Don Quijote I and II. Just search for "Don" and you will find it.

  • It's not free, but pick up the Edith Grossman translation, which is fantastic.

  • Tobias Smollett translated it in 1755. According to Salman Rushdie (in an interview w/ Terry Gilliam on the "Lost in La Mancha" DVD, it is a lively accessible, though not completely faithful) translation.
