Book & Review Forums: Happiness Quotations
Not Very Happy!
I've found most of Gretchen's selected quotations to be more dismal than happy, or even about happiness. Today's, by Henry Miller, is just dire: "Surely every one realize, at some point along the way, that he is capable of living a far better life than the one he has chosen." Sheesh - just shoot me already!

Well, perhaps it was meant as an inspirational quote -- challenging us all to live a happier life. Are there happier quotes you could suggest? Perhaps we could create another series with happy quotes from readers. What do you think?

This particular series improves as it goes...but wasn't it Flaubert who said one has to be fat, dumb and totally self-absorbed to be happy? As sensitive people are too aware of what is going on to be content and happy.

The book wasn't much better. I'm not sure why I subscribed to these quotes, but I'm ending it now.

Really? I loved The Happiness Project. In fact, I passed it on to one of my brothers who has started to learn Korean, inspired by that book.

OK, Thursday's quote has me utterly confused:
“A hint for the future. Always relieve pressure by a flight. Always violently turn the pillow: hack an outlet. Often a trifle does.... These are travelers notes which I offer myself should I again be lost.”
VIRGINIA WOOLF
So really - how often did Ms. Woolf get to choose air travel over train travel? And "hack an outlet" - wtf? I'm not even going to get into why we should be violent when we turn the hotel pillow over to get to the cool side in the middle of the night. Personal I like to keep my nocturnal bed-linene-related motions as non-violent as possible.
If we're going to get travel tips disguised as happiness quotations, I think someone a little more contemporary might have been more relevant.Apr 15, 2011 7:24 pm

I should have done the same, but I kept holding out, with an ounce of hope that eventually it would get better. The 30th of 30 quotes arrived in my inbox today and I have to say I couldn't be more disappointed...
“She always had the feeling that it was very, very dangerous to live even one day.“
VIRGINIA WOOLF
Excuse me, but can somebody please tell me what the hell this quote has to do with happiness?

Yeah, really. I read through that book last summer and felt like I gained nothing from it. I gave Gretchin a second chance (30 chances?) to redeem herself in my books with these happiness quotations. Fail.May 13, 2011 10:14 am
