You Can't Judge a Book by its Cover

2 out of 5

Come on, now. First Jane talks to a dead man. Now she reads minds. What next - Jane travels back in time to solve a murder? Laurel Dewey can write - she sucks you in. But isn't the cop or PI supposed to be human - only tougher and smarter, more observant, more intuitive? Real cops and PI's don't talk to dead men or read minds.

  • The story might seem a bit far-fetched, I get that too. However, Dewey really sucks you into her storylines and leaves you with a feeling of wanting to read more. Thanks to dailylit, she's now an author I want to read more from.

  • Jane Perry IS human...and tough...and smart...extremely observant and quite intuitive. In fact, it's her intuition that usually solves the crimes. So what if Dewey gives Perry a mystical adventure to operate within? I think it's what makes these stories and her books so original.

  • Okay, let's say "mystical adventure" makes Jane Perry unigue and Dewey original. But is Jane a cop or is she Harry Potter's sister? Jane already is unigue. Does she need to be unbelievable to be interesting? Nobody talks to the dead. Nobody reads minds. If Jane can, she may as well sit in her office and solve crimes.
Oh, wait, Nero Wolfe already did that. But he never claimed to read minds or talk to dead men.

  • Nobody talks to the dead? Nobody reads minds?

Samspade, you need to get out and circulate more. People DO talk to the dead. People DO read minds.

Jane Perry is a cop and she is always leery of anything too "woo-woo" and has to be FORCED into believing it exists and then operating within that context. What I think Dewey is doing in her stories and novels is introducing mystical concepts that you would never see in traditional crime thrillers and doing that through a character (Perry) who makes it more comfortable for someone like yourself to read more of her story.

I mean, you DO like Jane Perry. So, I guess she's captured your attention and respect. : )
