Everyone in the book misinterprets--things people say, write, do, situations etc. And it's these misunderstanding that create the tapestry of human interaction with society and on a smaller more individual level. The book is also about the uses of human energy (see A.S.Byatt's commentary on the book)--but you'll figure this bit out by the end. Aside from the different levels of meaning, it's also a really great read so enjoy!
