I am currently reading Middlemarch and it is keeping my interest though I do not like it nearly as much as Eliot’s other novel, The Mill on the Floss.

Much of Middlemarch seems satirical to me. Has anyone else read this book? What do you think?

Yes, George Eliot is satirizing the revolution of the 1830s but the book is much more than that. The wonderful thing about Middlemarch is first the commentary on understanding and misunderstanding. Everyone in the book misinterprets--things people say, write, do, situations etc. And it's these misunderstanding that create the tapestry of human interaction with society and on a smaller more individual level. The book is also about the uses of human energy (see A.S.Byatt's commentary on the book)--but you'll figure this bit out by the end. Aside from the different levels of meaning, it's also a really great read so enjoy!
