About: Moby Dick

Melville's Stylistic Shape-Shifting

In Chapters 37-40, the novel shifts forms from narrative to drama and we read two soliloquies followed by a scene 'scripted' for several sailors. This is just one example of Melville's unusual choices throughout. What do you make of his odd stylistic moves? Is there something gained by changing course this way? Does it remind you of other works? Other authors?
