Book & Review Forums: Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

Our Family Forum

Welcome to “Our Family Forum”—a place for our family to connect and discuss great books. We believe in the power of great literature, but mostly, we just love to read. Or … we were hoodwinked into this under the pretext of family harmony, and we fell for it!

This is the first book we are reading together on DailyLit. We are reading Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm because I (Auntie UtahHAL) put out a list of possibilities and Rebecca captured everyone’s heart. They could all relate to difficult family situations, and especially bad-tempered, irritable Aunts that are used to getting their way.

Let’s get started…is everybody ready?

  • Thanks to that irritable Aunt (from another) for organizing this. When miles separate us we all have our personal desires to try to connect and you've put a lot of effort in putting this together. Thank you for the idea, desire, persistence...now as TJ says: [put on your helmets]... Let's Read!

  • Setting up the Family Forum and getting the DAILYLIT emails is easy. Getting everyone in our family on the same page at the same time—well, it’s like herding cats! We’re getting very close to the starting line though. I expect to commence our reading soon—MEOW!

  • Ok- is this where we write comments daily? Rebecca is a spirited one! I'll read this to Addie as she was just giving me guff this morn! She'll relate. I looked up alighted as "a woman alighted from a wagon" thinking it was "appeared" but it's actually get down from a vehicle in this case. When a bird alights on a branch it's comes down upon- not appears" on as I thought.

  • I first of all want to know if Rebecca has any of the same beads in her purse that I have? I wouldn't want to be on that ride holding a bead kit and I would never open it-one little bump.....goodbye beads!! She sounds like she has the energetic spirit of Shirley Temple in the movie!! And if Addie hasn't seen any of her movies....let me know. I'll send them to her for her Birthday! Have Fun!

  • In the participant list up above (that I just read) it should read Aunt Shawn. (she can be just as ornery as the other aunts) ;) OK I just figured out that Shirley temple did this movie & that's why your talking about her. I didn't like any ST movies except Heidi: "let's have some toasted cheese grandfather!!!"

  • Poor Rebecca! I’ve been recipient of “the look” in my younger years, and more recently, the giver of such a look—how will Rebecca endure? Morgan? Katie? Chea? TJ? Brook or Addie? Do you kids have any thoughts? Thanks goodness I don’t know any Aunts that behave like that! ;-D

Our Family Forum consists of moms, aunts, daughters, nieces, cousins, siblings, grandchildren, and of course the notorious Grandma Jan. We live in Utah, Texas, and Michigan; and you hit the nail right on the head when you said, “we’re having a BLAST!” We highly recommend Dailylit as a way to connect and have fun...

  • I HAVE A FEELING OUR LITTLE REBECA IS GOING TO FIGURE IT ALL OUT AND IN A HURRY. WHO WOULD NOT REMEMBER "THAT LOOK" MY MOM WAS THE QUEEN OF "THAT LOOK" REBECA NEEDS A DOG

    by schnauzer

  • No-grandma Jan- A dog is not the answer to every problem! Aunt Mirandy will kick her out the door with the dog & that will be the end of it. Addie said "Rebecca doesn't need another dog- I do!" to which I replied "Maybe if you go live with Aunt Shawn you'll be satisfied" (apparently George isn't enough). Any extra room at Sunflower Lane?

  • ...the (remove-Simpson & insert Langton) house looked, to quote a Riverboro expression, "as if the devil had been having an auction in it."—that’s all I have to say!

Except that Angus Pangus came for a visit while TJ and Bradley went down south on a little trip—oolala—you can all have your doggies gang! I love’em, but ... lengthy visits make me into Aunt Mirandy, it's not pretty!

  • “There were many hard-working people among the inhabitants, but life wore away so quietly and slowly that there was a good deal of spare time for conversation,-- under the trees at noon in the hayfield; hanging over the bridge at nightfall; seated about the stove in the village store of an evening. These meeting-places furnished ample ground for the discussion of current events as viewed by the mas- culine eye, while choir rehearsals, sewing societies, reading circles, church picnics, and the like, gave opportunity for the expression of feminine opinion.”

After reading this I thought, “How lovely—life today is so different! Then I read on and I wasn’t too sure I'd have wanted that life either.

  • Ahhh- it is so nice to have a good rain shower wash over everything to start a new day. Mr Cobb just became much brighter than I'd given him credit for!!! Don't judge a book by it's cover or first impressions. A boy in my Sunday School class today was misbehaving, talking, fidgety- I was sure he wasn't paying much attention at all- We made soup can pencil holder stone wells & when his mom picked him up I asked him to tell her the verse (which everyone had written on their wells, except him), fully expecting silence,...to which he eloquently replied "Drink My life's water and you will never thirst again!"

  • Is anyone out there? I'd like to take a vote regarding the poem ending you liked best today. 1,2 or the third ending.... I liked #2. how about you? Addie liked #2 because "it rhymes the best".

  • I’ve decided that I’m starting a document of the words and phrases I love in this book. Every time I read a section I find phrases I’m keen on and want to remember. Here are two from this past week. 1.) choice conundrums 2.)spasms of bravery

Shellie—you had mentioned sharing words we didn’t know and looked up. Here is one I recently had to fine the meaning of: doggerel— is a derogatory term for verse considered of little literary value. The word probably derived from dog, suggesting either ugliness, or unpalatability (as in food fit only for dogs).[1] There are popular forms which are in themselves essentially prescriptions for doggerel, including the limerick, double dactyl and sonnet. [I’m sure Grandma Jan will have something to say about that definition. Just remember, I looked it up and didn’t make it up!]

  • As far as voting on the poem...are you talking about the poem from a long time ago? I don’t recall what section that’s in. Will you remind us so we can look back without searching all of the sections?

Hey, Grandma Jan-- I may have teetered on the edge of the cliff now and again, but I have posted almost as much as Aunt Shell! Get after those grandchildren, and that other daughter of yours who doesn't like poor Rebecca. Who doesn't like Rebecca--it's unthinkable!

  • I'm starting to think that while Rebecca is simply wonderful, she's also bumping into some wonderful people along the way that improve her life. Addie wants to know why Aunt Chea doesn't like Rebecca. She said, "I guess some people don't like old fashioned stuff ya know." So is this the case Aunt Chea? You were the big Shirley Temple fan in the beginning. Catch up already!

  • Poor Rebecca has lost her family of bloggers, or so it seems. Perhaps Miss Maxwell and Adam Ladd can come up with a fairy godmother for the Family Forum. I know Grandma Jan, Aunt Shellie and Addie love Rebecca too much to give up,so, maybe a little fairy dust will help. Okay, it's really sand from the beach in Cabo--consider yourselves sprinkled...

I been reading about Kate Douglas Wiggin (Rebecca's author) who led a fascinating life. She was the founder of the first public kindergarten west of the Rocky Mountains, and worked tirelessly for many years to promote the movement to establish public kindergartens. My kinda gal!

We already have the last installment in my inbox. I'm trying not to read it first! How many days do the rest of you have? Maybe we could finish on the same day...? Happy Good Friday Mr.Cobb! Can you imagine not being able to access the library of fiction? It makes me sad to think of it! But I’m cheered when I think of all you...MY roses of joy!
