Book & Review Forums: War and Peace
dude, it's long...
I'm about halfway through War and Peace and I can see why it's famous and why there are so many jokes about it's length. It's LONG, I mean I've been reading about 20 installments a day and I'm still only half done. The story is epic and drawn out-- the descriptions, detailed. But, there are sparkling moments in the book-- revealing its insight and genius. I hope I can hold out to the end, though, for I desperately want to be able to say that I've read War and Peace!

Keep at it! I started reading it about three months ago, and while I'm not finished yet, the end is in sight. It really is worth it.

Yes, I encourage you to stay with it. Its an experience, as much as a book. The old movie version is more fun with Audrey Hepburn, when one has read the book. Plus its a book one reflects on long after you have finished reading it.

Well, I just finished it. I'm glad I read it, but I wouldn't want to do it again! haha. Tolstoy really created a deep historical treatise that touches on the human philosophy and human nature. I learned a lot, but I'm happy it's over.

Keep me posted @elizabette81. I read Anna Karenina years ago and remember enjoying it. I still have my worn copy around.

Yay! I finished reading War and Peace, too. I'm also glad I read it; and although it was jarring to switch from the "war" parts to the "peace" parts, I can understand why he (Tolstoy) did it that way. It also sent me reading up on that period in history, which also came in handy since that's exactly where my daughter's history class is now.
I read Anna Karenina recently (here on Daily Lit), and found I really liked it...more so than War and Peace...but not by much. Both are excellent books for anyone with the willpower and determination to finish.Oct 3, 2010 9:44 am
