Book & Review Forums: War and Peace
How could you not love this book?
Easy. War and Peace fits the description of a classic: A book everyone would have liked to claim reading but are glad they didn't. That it reflects an important historic event makes it important; that I actually read every word--especially the polemical dissertation at the end--makes me a time bandit. Recommendation: Not everything recommended by starchy old shirts is worth the effort. Starchy old shirts love the classics. But that's what makes them starchy old shirts--and very boring people.

I loved this book too! Yes, it took me some time to get into it, and get used to the rhythm of the storytelling, but luckily I'm too stubborn to abandon a book just because it's a slow-mover. I fell in love with it about a third of the way in, and was sorry it ended.
Also, it's been my experience that the books the "starchy old shirts" insist kids read are great books that are pushed on kids that are too young to appreciate the story, the moral metaphors, or the historical background. Since I discovered this site, I've been reading all the classics I've hated as a kid when I was forced to read them, and realized most of them are delightful, now that I can understand them better.Oct 24, 2011 6:09 pm
