Book & Review Forums: The Count of Monte Cristo
The best book....a little odd ending (Spoilers alert)

I have read so many books, but Count of Monte Cristo is by far the best of all. The problem I faced while reading was the language, apart from that the concept was most amazing and the way Dumas expressed it was...exhilarating. The ending however was a bit off. I was very well hoping that Dantes will get back with Mercedes but he decided to leave her in despair. I felt for her, she did not do anything wrong in the whole scenario, apart from asking count to die in her son's stead. She was in no way responsible for Dantes imprisonment and when she realized that he is not coming back, she had a right to move on. Moreover she had no idea that the person she will marry is the one responsible for Dantes condition. Anyways, all things apart great book, must read.

I felt the same way. Frankly, I thought Mercedes's son would end up with the slave princess. He'd confessed his attraction for smart, exotic women; I thought that was foreshadowing.
The Count treated Mercedes with exquisite deference, but she wasn't awarded the full measure of reward that others (such as Morell & his family) got because once in her youth, her faith (in Dantes) failed. Maybe you have to be a) Catholic and b) an 18th c. French reader to think Mercedes's fate was just.Aug 20, 2010 12:36 pm
