Fond memories reinforced

I first read this as part of the wider collection over 20 years ago, when I was still at school... I recall how deeply it touched me, and felt this particular story had an emotional resonance and depth that eclipsed all the other stories in this exceptional collection.
Yes, there is a deep melancholy here, but it is leavened by such vivid characters and a powerful evocation of a Christmas gathering that I find it uplifting and hugely life-affirming.
