Book & Review Forums: Struggling Upward, or Luke Larkin's Luck
No frills

If you like short declarative sentences, a relatively transparent plot, and a young hero this is a fine read. The "character" of the characters is obvious from the first and this motif of opposite character pervades the book. If you are trying to hammer home the precepts of hard work and clean living to a preteen reader this is a good choice. On the other hand if you are "into" prose and subtle plotting this is going to leave you wanting.
