Book & Review Forums: This Side of Paradise
still searching for his Magnificense ...a small taste found

While disappointed in two other stories I have read so far by F. Scott...I want to stay the course, and discover the wonders to be found in his works...
I have begun to discover his talents .. in This Side Of Paradise...
I want a story where one can't wait to find out what's going to happen next...the kind of book in which one cares about the characters and never wants to let their stories go....almost dreading getting close to the end...yet, not being able to stop one's self from rushing on nonetheless...
That wasn't the case for me with this book...but I was taken with this young man's amazing abilities with a first novel and at such a young age to boot!
There is a touching line near it's end...where F. Scott writes that he hoped that a hundred years into the future...those reading his words would wonder if his eyes were brown or blue....Mr. F. Scott...I do believe your wish has been granted...
I'm on to The Great Gatsby ...

I have finished The Great Gatsby, and may be done with F. Scott as well...
What's so great about The Great Gatsby?? I get it. F. Scott can write beautiful 'prose' but when I chose to read a fictional novel..I'm looking for a story..characters to know and learn about to have feelings for them one way or the other, this is not possible in Gatsby..no depth
he can write forever describing one magnificent sunset after another...
Sometimes I think we are so often told that something is 'great' that we are supposed to see it's greatest whether we truly enjoyed it or not...
I do see his talent with words..Feb 20, 2009 12:34 pm
