Hi Maggie,
I'm interested in writing a feature article on DailyLit for a Communication Writing class I'm taking (I'm a PR major at Boston University). Would it be possible to put me in touch with someone at DailyLit who wouldn't mind doing an e-mail interview or two?Mar 18, 2009 8:51 am
by alyssabu -
@alyssabu: Sure! You can get in touch with Susan Danziger, our Founder and CEO, at susan [at] dailylit [dot] com.

While completing the survey I remember asking about not featuring the books I've read/rated on my profile. I did at one point get a reply from the CEO, and today I was happily surprised because my suggestions was implemented.
Thank you!Mar 20, 2009 9:37 pm

I just want to say thank you for the Wikipedia Grand Tour. I'm finding it fascinating (sometimes) and the DailyLit chunked version is just what I need.
Before that I tried Moby Dick and didn't do so well :)Apr 2, 2009 7:55 am

@books: You're welcome!
@Murasaki: Aw, shucks; you're making us blush. :)
@Christycat: That sounds familiar! Susan Danziger founded DailyLit because she was reading (emails/online) all day and yet had no time to *read.*
@ahilborne: Glad to hear you're enjoying the Grand Tour. Since it's actually longer than Moby Dick, maybe when you're finished you'll feel like Melville's novel is no big deal...Apr 2, 2009 12:29 pm

DailyLit is a really great service. A suggestion that I would have is to allow more customizable options in terms of length and when you receive it.

I always want to check out dailylit.com on my Blackberry... is an application ever going to be created, "DailyLit for Blackberry"?
Apr 23, 2009 10:36 pm
by Ayndrea -
@blandnewspigot: Do you already have a DailyLit Bookroll on your blog? If not, you can add it by going to your settings page and clicking on the "Bookroll" link.
@jkeesh: Have you checked out the advanced options, available on your settings page (click on "manage")? You can choose any combination of days of the week to receive installments, and one of three installment lengths: normal, longer (2 installments), or longest (4 installments).
@Ayndrea: Thanks for the suggestion--improving the DailyLit experience for our mobile users is definitely something that's on our list.Apr 24, 2009 10:01 am

I've just read "I Thought Once How Theocritus Had Sung," in the "Late, Great Poets" series. It has proper em-dashes! So much of the rest of your material only has two en-dashes, looking like this: "--". It's incredibly nasty, especially when (as in some poems) dashes are somewhat over-used. Can't you go through your library and do a search-and-replace (and proof-read :-) one with the other, please?
May 15, 2009 8:51 am
by ahilborne -
@ahilborne The reason many of the em-dashes are represented as two en-dashes is because we originally offered books only in plain text, and the source texts formatted their dashes that way.
Are there other folks who are bothered by the en-dash styling?May 16, 2009 10:32 pm

MaggieH, I haven't taken any notice of the dash styles, but that could be because I'm used to plain old ASCII text, which can't do real en and em dashes, as you indicated. So it certainly doesn't bother me if en dashes are double hyphens -- I type them that way myself (like just now). IMO, it's not worth changing then for the plain text messages DailyLit sends, but it could be worth doing a replacement for HTML (or such) formatted messages, if it's not too difficult.

MaggieH., I'm curious what is the first book that most people choose to read on Dailylit? An observation, as popular as Bram Stroker is why are not more of his works offered I am wondering...thanks.
Jul 3, 2009 11:25 am
by dreamdust -
@Dronak Thanks for the feedback--much appreciated!
@dreamdust I think our most popular book is probably "Pride and Prejudice," and many folks who read it by DailyLit have already read it (at least once) in a more traditional format. I've often wondered if that's because people like to start with something familiar as they get used to the DailyLit format, but it could just be because Jane Austen is so popular! In terms of adding new titles, we really try to respond to reader requests. Are there particular works by Stoker you'd like to see on DailyLit?Jul 4, 2009 10:05 pm
by MaggieH (admin) -
He wrote short stories and non-fiction as well as novels. The Jewel of the Seven Stars is probably easier to find. His Erotic Tales of the Victorian Age, Under the Sunset, etc...might work on this site-a judgement call on your part. Thanks!

I have a suggestion, and I think this is an appropriate place to post it. I've been reading the Eight Stories for Summer collection, and enjoying it, but I've also found that it's not always obvious to me when a particular story ends. This is normally pretty easy to do with printed books, but it seems harder with the format of these electronic versions of books. I'm not sure exactly how you create your books and installments, but would it be possible to add some extra line like "end of chapter" or "end of story" to the appropriate installment in books? I think this would help readers know where good break points are without having to get the next installment to find out if they reached one. Thanks for considering this suggestion.

MaggieH, When I was reading Grant I noticed that it was one of the most finished reading books with the other readers. And it made me wonder which of the longer books (besides Pride & Prejudice) are the most finished on this site?

MaggieH. thanks because this inquiring mind did want to know! With 260 installments of Moby Dick-I, for one have new respect for my fellow readers. Do you guys ever do surveys of the readers for your demographics? That would be fun.
Sep 9, 2009 2:50 pm

Our readers are a seriously literary bunch--260 installments? No problem.
@dreamdust Another great question! We have done some demographic surveys and will create another blog post sharing some info about our readership. In the meantime, check out the results of a survey we did on reading habits--our readers definitely love their books.Sep 10, 2009 1:20 pm

Is there someone at the Victoria & Albert that we can give feedback to or do we do that via your site? Today I had no photo, where one should have been and although I know this is new, there do seem to be some glitches. Thanks

by dreamdust -
@dreamdust Which installment didn't include a photo? And what kind of device (computer, Blackberry, etc.), program (Gmail, Outlook, etc.), and operating system (Windows XP, Vista, etc.) were you reading it on? I'm reading this book and have had a photo in every installment so far.

It was 6-9 Tiaras: Love and Marriage-no photo. I see bookwormnik in book & reviews forum mentions no photos also. I'm using a computer/Windows it has just been 1 time for no photo for me. But there is a resend issue, as I thought well I'll just resend it the next day before I bothered you. And it would not resend the last installment, but send all previous ones. So ?!

dreamdust - I don't mean to intrude on Maggie helping you out but when you typically receive other emails do you see pictures and nice formatting? Or is it all plain text? Have you had pictures appear in any of the other instalments?
I only ask because I just finished some work with producing email newsletters and had some problems with Outlook only displaying the plain text version of emails rather than the HTML emails.Nov 5, 2009 6:19 pm
by cresswga -
I'm calling it the curse of the tiaras, as the photos do not come up on the tiara installments (6-9 and 9-12) all the photos showed-up on the other installments. Any helpful tips are most welcome. On my end I reset my installments to daily since this is ongoing, but that is the only change I've made.

There are a few people having issues with the images, and it looks like it's a problem with Outlook 2003 running on XP. Microsoft sent out an update at some point that is causing them to block images from some domains, and it looks as if we've been caught in that update. Unfortunately there's nothing we can do. We'd recommend upgrading from Outlook 2003 to a newer version or reading using a different email client (like Gmail or Yahoo!) or an RSS feed.
We found a solution that might work to fix Outlook 2003 (or might not!), but it involves digging into your registry, so you should only attempt it if you consider yourself technically savvy. We don't take any responsibility for any damage to your computer if you do attempt what is described in this fix. The information is here: http://theofficecubicle.com/2008/02/01/outlook-2003-red-x-where-embedded-image-should-be-in-email/comment-page-2/Nov 6, 2009 11:44 am

I understood Heart of Darkness so much better after reading Burn This Book on your site. I wish there was some way of putting books together that shed light on each other for the readers. Or perhaps a suggested list: if you read this, then this is further recommended in this area of reading. What do you think?

Many years ago (in the stone age of computers), I took an informal class on using the Mac. I told the instructor that I had two wishes. I wanted a dictionary that actually pronounced words for the user, and also a site that would send book sections to my email, so I could read them without feeling too overwhelmed! He told me neither of these would be possible in my lifetime!!! Wrong!!!!!!!! Thank you for fulfilling one of my wishes.

Is Dailylit now restricted to only U.S. readers? And every now and then I click on a book where it says no longer offered, is there a time period on the books? Just wondering how things work, thanks.

Occasionally we can only acquire the rights to offer certain contemporary books in the United States, so for those titles readers coming from an IP address will not be able to access the book page.
The "Sorry, this book is not available" message showed up for a few books yesterday (for instance, Crush It!) due to a bug, which we've now fixed.Jan 5, 2010 11:29 am

@dreamdust: You can select any combination of days to receive your installments but going into the "advanced" options. Click on a "manage" link in any installment or click on the "manage" link from your settings page, click on "more" next to the book title, then click on "advanced" under options to select Saturday and Sunday delivery.

MaggieH, Thank U very much to your site. I am interested in single inst'ment short stories, but those are in small number at present in our site. Can u increase that ?
Feb 5, 2010 6:21 am
by sri.meenuga -
@sri.meenuga: Most short stories--especially classic ones--are longer than our installment length of about 1000 words. Many of our short stories are under 15 installments, and if you select to receive a longer installment length than normal (under "advanced" options) you can read them in just a few installments.

Hi Maggie,
Thank you and DailyLit again for sending me an advanced reader's edition of a book (The Man from Beijing). I wanted to post a short review of it, but it's not listed in your book database, and there's no forum topic for it. Is there a different forum for ARC reviews? Thanks.Jun 3, 2010 7:11 pm
