Kid's book about three legged machines controlling the world

I read this book when I was a child and would like to have it again. Does anyone remember the title? Thanks in advance.

Wouldn't this be War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells: the invaders come in three legged machines. But I'm not sure they got to control world.

I think Madicus found the answer he was looking for as he suggested Tripods in the book request forum.

I remember watching a TV series based on the books when I was a kid that I really enjoyed but it was cancelled before they were able to film the last book so that was the only one I read.

There is a prequel to the Tripods trilogy called "When the Tripods Came".
