Ideas & Suggestions

Critical Works Online (free ones!)

When I would read a book from the library, after I finished it, I'd go check out some critical works on it.

After I read "Daisy Miller" here, I was unable to find any free critical essays of it online. I think this is one thing the Internet is missing!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to find critical works on most anything without having to pay?

Also, I relied quite a bit on Harold Bloom's books. Any opinions on him?

  • A quick Google Search for
"henry james daisy miller" quickly turned up this study guide [http://tinyurl.com/2ypgaz] among others.
Scholar.google.com will target academic essays, for example:
    this essay [http://tinyurl.com/yvbe5a]
or, maybe even this, if you speak Italian, [http://tinyurl.com/yu4a6l]. (You need to subscribe or be a member of a university library to see articles in some online journals and repositories.)
Or you could check out your local library online (via http://www.peoplesnetwork.gov.uk/) or the IPL [http://tinyurl.com/27xodq] or see what people are saying on LibraryThing.com. Hope that helps!

  • Or you could try another author. No shortage of excellent stuff online about Borges for example! [http://www.bookrags.com/studyguide-gardenforkingpaths/essay2.html]

  • Try searching on OAIster (http://oaister.umdl.umich.edu). There's at least one free online dissertation about Daisy Miller there.

  • Wow, everything I tried to look at has "Restricted Access" or is a pay site.

Some of them say they can only be accessed at your public library. That's kind of the point of being online, is you don't have to go anywhere...

Guess I'd better pay up my fine & go to the library! : )

(I was going to do it, anyway...)

Oh, the MonkeyNotes site was not restricted.
