Calvin from "Calvin and Hobbes" was my favorite character as a child. I loved his wild imagination and his curious nature. Although he was a bit of a handful, his mischievousness was a result of his lust for learning and excitement.

Lucy from C.S. Lewis' Narnia series-- particularly her roles in "Prince Caspian" and "Voyage of the Dawn Treader." Out of all the characters I often felt that I could relate to her the best, and she got to be Aslan's messenger to the others quite frequently and she saw him the most.

The original Nancy Drew - unfortunately, the modern series bears NO resemblance. I read every one, which lead the all the Hardy Boy, and on and on. I love mysteries and tend to read a whole series if I find an author I like. A well-written Nancy Drew can teach thinking skills too. Forget the new ones; search for the old ones.

Wow! I had a few, but probably Rainbow Brite stands out. I had almost all the Rainbow Brite dolls, the Rainbow cottage, a Rainbow Brite music tape and watched many of her cartoons.

I read a book "the old nurses stocking basket" the nurse made up a story the size of the hole in the child's stocking. It was only a small book but I loved it. I also had a picture book about fairies, Pegs book of fairies or something like that. These have stuck in my mind for between 50-60 years.

Laura Ingalls. She kept me running to the library to see if there were any in the series that I hadn't read yet. I grew up on a small farm -- althought it was in middle Tennessee -- and I just felt like there were so many similarities in our lives.

Meg Murry of "A Wrinkle in Time" was my favorite. I was her age when I first read the book and I thought she must have been a real person known to Madeleine L'Engle, she was so true-to-life. Shy, uncertain, insecure, stubborn, easily embarrassed, and yet fierce in her protective love of her family, Meg is still a friend of mine all these years later.

My favorite childhood character was Dorothy Gale from the Wizard of Oz. Realizing that there is no place more safe and full of love than your home was reassuring for a fearful child like myself. I felt a sigh of relief every time she woke up to find her family and friends around her no matter how many times I saw the film.

Pippi Longstocking, of course. What child would not be in amazement of her lifestyle and freedom. Her father was absent the majority of time; she could ride her horse at will and roll out pepperkakor on the floor. Brilliant.

Ooooh... for me, it has to be three characters, all of which are still favourites today. First would be Tilly Beany, whose book 'Tilly Beany Saves the World' (by Annie Dalton) is still my favourite book today. It contained so many of the elements I adored: dolphins, magic, dreams coming true - and children kicking butt and saving the day! I was Tilly's age (6) when I read it and I've loved it ever since.
Second is Peter Pan. What a brilliant, classic children's creation. Again with Peter Pan there was magic, flight, fairies and the power of childhood, and I fell in love with the wonder of Neverland and have read, seen or heard just about every adaptation, sequel and prequel I've come across.
Third is Pippi Longstocking. I loved how she was so independent and always did her own thing, free without any adults to encumber her. My dream was to have red hair in pigtails, and freckles, like her!Nov 25, 2009 12:40 pm

Winnie the Pooh. So nostalgic, as soon as the music starts playing and I hear Pooh's voice.

Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. She loved the oddest characters, was loyal to them and soldiered right to the end. There's no place like home!

Little Orphan Annie comics got me through a terrible period of boredom one summer, and I will be forever grateful to her. I was staying at my aunt's, and she took me to the college library, where we found newspaper comics made into books. I love how Annie took in the dog, even though it wasn't easy for her, and how she handles all the abrupt changes in her life.
