Question of the Week #53: Holiday Classics

It was during this week in 1965 that "A Charlie Brown Christmas" premiered--and it's been a holiday classic ever since. What are your favorite holiday stories?

  • Fruitcakes by Truman Capote is my favorite holiday story of all time. My mother would have us all watch it every year growing up. As a child it was just tradition, but now I look forward to watching it with her every year.

  • I like Capote's story also, a real treasure to read as well as to watch. But I love the music and the story of the Nutcracker ballet for this time of year.

  • The original "Miracle on 34th Street" is one I love to watch every year. It brings memories of my childhood and the wonder of Santa Claus. It never fails to bring a tear to my eye by the end of the movie.

  • I think Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is a great holiday read. If you start the book just as the holiday music start playing on the radio, and read at a leisurely pace, you would probably get to the part of the book where it's Christmas at Hogwarts just as your own Christmas season rolls around. It really adds a fantastic and magical atmosphere to the wintertime.

  • How about the movie A Christmas Story? My aunt loves to put it on and leave it playing continuously throughout the day. The voiceover from the adult narrator POV is very well done, and the sweetly comic tribulations of the Christmas season are memorable. As a matter of fact, my husband and I had a Chinese lunch on Xmas Eve and sang "fa ra ra ra" in imitation of the family eating Xmas dinner at the local Chinese eatery, serenaded by the staff.

  • A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I love all of Dickens work's but at Christmas I have to watch all the versions of this story even the really dumb and dumber versions. LOL
