Question of the Week

Question of the Week #62: Happy Birthday Charles Dickens!

This week we celebrate the birthday of Charles Dickens, master of the novel (and serialized fiction). If you're a fan of classic literature you've probably read at least one of his thirteen novels--not to mention his voluminous other writings.

What is your favorite Dickens book, essay, story, or quote?

  • I've only read A Christmas Carol by him, much to my shame. Hopefully I'll get at least one of his read this year!

  • Great Expectations. I still have my copy from my high school literature class over 30 years ago. Excellent story.

  • I've always been fond of these 2 quotes: A loving heart is the truest wisdom. And-Reflect upon your present blessings of which every man has many-not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.

  • A TALE OF TWO CITIES. I get lost in the story every time I read it.

  • I agree with Dubuas here, it has to be - A Tale of Two Cities. One of the best opening lines of any classic. Right up there with Melville in my humble opinion.

  • Bleak House - surely one of the best mystery stories of all times. The characters are superb, Dickens' way of naming people is wonderful. I strongly urge anyone who has not seen it or read it to do so forthwith! It keeps you gripped right the way through.

  • I recently read "Little Dorrit" and am currently reading "The Old Curiosity Shop". The mini-series shown on public television got me interested and I found that the books are well worth the read. I'm intending to read more of Dickens in the coming year. I especially enjoy the characters and the political satire, which has application even in todays' events.

  • Great Expectations. I loved the story, but I was disappointed a little by the ending.
