Question of the Week
Question of the Week #63: Remakes
Masterpiece Theatre recently aired a brand-new adaptation of Emma and re-aired adaptations of Persuasion and Northanger Abbey.
Which book-film adaptations would you like to see remade? Which are perfect just the way they are?

Needs remaking: The Running Man - O. M. G. The worst Stephen King adaptation, and that's saying a lot. Bears almost no resemblance to the book. Ok, there's a reality game in both that's "do or die", but that's it. Not Arnold's finest moment.
Perfect just as they are: The Dead Zone (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085407/). Maybe the best Stephen King adaptation. As good as the book.
The Call of Cthulhu (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478988/), the 2005 black and white, silent film, based on the story of the same name, made by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. No other TCoC movie ever need be made. Netflix has it but it's hard to find otherwise.
Where Eagles Dare (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065207/) Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood in the same movie. How could that be improved on? As good as the book. Maybe better.Feb 16, 2010 10:23 pm

The movie V for Vendetta is a sorta weak / lame version of the ideas in the graphic novel / comic. I just finished Watchmen, so I need to watch the movie now (I have a feeling it's going to be disappointing though, compared to the book).
I like The Remains of the Day with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson -- the book is amazing and the movie does it justice.
Also, it's not film, but season 1 of Dexter on Showtime is a really good adaptation -- I like it better than the book it's based on.Feb 17, 2010 1:08 pm

Need Remaking
Troy (The Iliad) - I love this classic, but the current film made the story far too flat for my liking. I see where he was going, but everything seemed so politically correct.
The Hours - Let's take a book rewrite it, add some senseless things into it and call it the same title?
The Scarlet Letter - Just because we like happy endings, doesn't mean we should rewrite the stories of authors who didn't make one for us.
Adaptations I loved:
I Am Legend - Great story and very nice additions to flesh out the parts that might not make sense today.
The Kite Runner - The adaptation was wonderful and brilliantly wove this story into a rich visual tapestry that worked in a satisfying way.
Fight Club - Never remake this Hollywood. It was perfect, just the way you told it.Feb 18, 2010 9:17 pm

Remake The Golden Compass. The books was great but the movie was awful.

I loved the remake of "I Am Legend" but not the theatrical ending. I loved the alternate ending which brought out the central question of the novel--If humanity changes--what does it mean to be human?

Hands down best ever film adaption of a book, "The Godfather." The book by Mario Puzo and the movie directed by FF Coppola are both masterpieces and are difficult to compare to one another as they are both so outstanding in their own ways. On the opposite end of the spectrum, my worst ever adaptation of a book to the screen must be that of Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," a classic on paper, ridiculous crap on screen.

I didn't really like the Mel Gibson remake of Hamlet but I absolutely loved Kenneth Branagh's version.

Olaf Stapledon's "Last and First Men"--since it chronicles the human race a few billion years into the future. Where ya gonna go from there? (I'd like to see somebody try!)
