Question of the Week #67: Leading Roles
Since we just launched Leonard Matlin's 151 Best Movies You've Never Seen, we've got movies on our minds. Think of your favorite book: who would you cast as the lead(s) in the film version?

My favorite book is nonfiction, Eden's Outcasts; the story of Louisa May Alcott and her father by John Mattrson and Debra Winger is the only actress who could do it justice.

Bill Murray as Barney Hendrickson in The Technicolor Time Machine by Harry Harrison. I've read this book three times over the years and it's about time for another go 'round.

Hilary Swank as Detective Jane Perry in "Protector." She's got the right amount of toughness and vulnerability to serve the character very well.

Jude Law as Syme; Sting as the Marquis/Ratcliffe; Tom Cruise as Bull; Robert Downey Jr. as the Professor; Johnny Depp as Gogol; Ron Howard (if he'll act again) as Gregory; Jack Black as Sunday; Julia Roberts as Gregory's sister; all from The Man Who Was Thursday, a Nightmare. This is a movie waiting to be made.

Whoops, forgot the Secretary-Lyle Lovett and changed my mind on Sunday, I think Steven Colbert would be perfect!

I'd really like to see A Confederacy of Dunces as a movie, but I'm not sure who'd be good enough and funny enough to play Ignatius. Wikipedia says that John Belushi, Chris Farley, and John Candy had been considered for the role before their deaths and that Will Ferrell was cast as Ignatius in a version that hasn't been filmed yet, but I think Jack Black could also be good...

I would love The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield to be made into a movie. I think Emily Blunt would be great as the bookish biographer Margaret Lea and Judi Dench would be amazing as the reclusive novelist Vida Winter.
