Jeeves, Alan Quatermain, Catkin (Anasazi Mysteries III), The Elephant's Child (not that young elephants are fictional but this one went to the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River all set about with fever trees to find out what the Crocodile had for dinner and got a new nose...)

I know the list said since 1900, but really Dicken's Scrooge wins hands down as an icon that everyone knows. Who has not said "Bah, humbug?" More recently, probably Lizabeth from the Stieg series.

Either Neil Gaiman's Sandman or Robert Rankin's Elvis Presley with Barry the time travelling Brussel sprout in his head (Armageddon: The Musical for anyone who is curious. Very funny book)
I was not surprised that neither character made the list!Jul 8, 2010 9:51 am

My favorite is definitely Dickon from The Secret Garden. He's the Nature child I wish I could still be.
