Question of the Week: The Sexiest Classic Book
What’s the sexiest classic/public domain book you could imagine someone reading?
Thanks to @pdunwin from Seattle for the suggestion. As he put it: “I hope the answers are more interesting than The Kama Sutra or Lady Chatterly's Lover.” His answer was Sherlock Holmes stories.

"Forever Amber" by Kathleen Winsor. It's a classic romance novel that was first published in 1944. It was considered so sexy that it was banned in fourteen US states as "pornography," even though there are no explicit sex scenes.
My mother remembers church leaders condemning it, and parents and teachers confiscating it. Despite the hoopla (or more probably BECAUSE of it) it was a best seller.
I read it not too long ago, and I found it to be very racy and sexy, but definitely NOT pornography...it's too clean for that. I think that may be why I like it so much; it's scandalous, but not "dirty."Jul 26, 2010 4:25 pm

Of the ones I've read, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. It's not explicit, but the sexual tension between Catherine and Heathcliff is definitely something.

For female characters it would be a tie between Moll Flanders and Becky Sharp (Vanity Fair) two really well-written characters.

Since today is Emily Bronte's birthday, I agree Wuthering Heights holds a unique place in this arena. Heathcliff just the name, alone conjures up so much angst.

Long ago I read a wonderfully entertaining novel by Fanny Burney entitled "Camilla." It is probably still wonderfully entertaining. It is certainly not "sexy," although the heroine is perpetually being pursued by aggressive and sometimes subtle males. In the development of English novels it comes between "Tom Jones" and Jane Austin. It is not as slap-happy as Fielding or as fine as Ms. Austin.
