Question of the Week

Writing that Makes us Swoon

What's your favorite piece of romantic writing? Could be a book, a poem, a song lyric, a secret note scrawled out just for you -- even a particularly thoughtful grocery list.

  • Across the table our eyes meet
    Hands out of reach
    A band playing
    Tommy Dorsey rhythms and
    Glenn Miller melodies.
I stand and step to your side
    My hand held out
    In silent invitation.
    You rise into my arms
and together we move across the crowded floor
You rest your head on my shoulder
    I pull you close and
    as the song softly dies
My jacket retains the scent of your hair
Your gown the warmth of my embrace

  • I did not know that John Hollander poem, but when I read it, I instantly recognized the Eagles song from Hell Freezes Over. Googled, and it turns out they acknowledged him fully when the put it to music.

Kind of a cheat if you ask me. "The Fog Comes on Little Cat's Feet (Guitar power chord)"

  • Married Love

    You and I
    Have so much love,
    That it
    Burns like a fire,
In which we bake a lump of clay
Molded into a figure of you
    And a figure of me.
Then we take both of them,
    And break them into pieces,
And mix the pieces with water,
And mold again a figure of you,
    And a figure of me.
    I am in your clay.
    You are in my clay.
In life we share one quilt.
In death we will share one coffin.

  • Maria Elena, You're the answer to a prayer
Maria Elena, Can't you see how much I care?
To me, your voice is like the echo of a sigh
And when you're near, my heart can't speak above a sigh
Maria Elena,Say that we will never part
Maria Elena,Take me to your heart
A love like mine is great enough for two
To share this love is really all I ask of you

  • "Love in the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel Marquez I have had it characterized as "magical realism" but found nothing fantastic or impossible in it; only great beauty and undying love.
