Reader Challenges

Drip, drip, drip...

I’ve just had my first sailing lesson, and it’s inspired me to pose this summer creative challenge: in one sentence, describe a moment in time in which water (in any form) played a pivotal or key role in your life.

  • Learning to swim without armbands, I fought to stay afloat, eventually, to my relief, succeeding.

  • Vowing to overcome my fear of sharks during my first visit to the Pacific Ocean, I slipped into the dark Kona water to experience a Manta Ray night snorkle; awesome!

  • I was desperately flailing for freedom with my head deep under the water as my little brother sat on my chest in the pool; but nobody believed I had nearly drowned, since he was too young to know what he was doing.

  • My little step son ran off at a family picnic and fell into the lake. He was found stuck under the dock. It was a tragic time and I am vigilant around the water.

  • Exiting the Ocean after riding the waves, I looked behind me to carefully scan for the rough waves so I did not get knocked down. Just then a rogue wave from the opposite direction got me and broke my wrist! Thank God it was the last day of vacation and not the first!

  • I was baptized (immersed in water) at the age of 12, confirming my decision to accept God's great gift to all who accept it--the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus, granting us eternal life.

  • At the age of 12, from my bedroom window, I watched lightening strike the bay water, sizzling and hissing and from that day forward I have held thunderstorms in the pantheon of great natural powers.

  • When I was 10 I drowned a bit, so I don't know if that counts as a pivotal moment. All I could think was: "Why aren't the life guards doing anything?"
And then I got driven home by my dad in a hearse. (He's a funeral director).

  • I once asked my husband to bring me a glass of water. As a joke he brought me hot water, which I tossed in his direction and it ended-up in a huge, fun waterfight!

  • Feminine Fluidity

I am the water in my father's tea.
Warming his heart with a drink of me.

I am the water dripping off olive leaves,
In my mother's garden, silver signs of peace.

I am a cool towel on my baby brother's brow
Wiping away worry, the only way I know how.

I'm light like warm air, my head up in the clouds.
But I am also rain water soaking into the ground.

Tickling tree roots, sleeping through the dawn.
Waking up slowly like dewdrops on the lawn.

I float down a river and rush into the emerald sea.
I dance to my own song, suspended in the breeze.

When I'm sad it hurts, I cry, quiet 'til I freeze.
I crack with pain and anger until I fall into your glass.
Your sweet embrace. My loving cup, I'll drink you to the last.

  • Many years ago, there was a full moon shining over Lake Michigan. It shone all the way to the shore. On that night, I felt as if I could walk on those rays and accomplish anything in my life. The moon and water have never lost their power over me since.

  • I, of course, don't remember this but I would have to say my baptism. I was raised in faith and my baptism gave me the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  • Water is LIFE. I realized that when I developed multiple medical complications years ago. My doctor was not sure that I would recover. I then started to read about the benefits of water and started my water treatment...It has been over 17 years and I have never felt better. Thanks to WATER I am cured!

  • I just remembered this one anecdote from when I was about 7 years old. I was in a pool, knew how to swim, but my mother made me put on a pair of arm-floats. Playing later on, I put them in my feet, and of course, in a second I was hanging upside down deep in the water.

For the strangest seconds in my life, I felt that I could actually breath underwater. I remember staring the the floating legs far from me and wondering why I wasn't out of breath yet. I was so excited that I wanted to go on like this. But then fear creeped in: what if I really needed air and wasn't able to take the floats off my feet on time? I took them off swiftly and swam to the steps of the pool. Sitting there, I wondered about it, but didn't have the courage to try it again. Now I wished I had stayed there longer.

  • Having to learn to swim in an indoor pool. I remember having trouble learning to hold my breath under water. The next eventful experience I had with water was 10 or so years later when I joined the Navy at age 17...!!

  • Sitting in a slow moving boat with my arm slung over the side, I felt the water pass through my fingers. I watched the water as it separated between each digit, and formed shapes. With the sunlight reflecting on every ripple, I knew I wanted to be a painter when I grew up. I felt like I never wanted to lose that image in my minds eye, and painting it in some form or capturing it some way, was what I would do.
