AS all the other children cried at their desks, I felt the need to join them.

I was upset because my haircut, new shoes, and freshly-sharpened #2 pencils were a mess before the end of the first week of school!

I cried very badly, almost everyday, holding onto my mother's dress with all my strength and screaming at the top of my voice that I wouldn't go into the class unless she would stay with me!!!

I sat there, at five years old, with my straight-as-a-stick bobbed hair, admiring Rebecca LeBlanc's springy Shirley Temple ringlets, knowing I looked like Imogene Coca.

Seeming too tall to my half-day kindergarten teacher, I spent my first day in first grade, fully freaking my mother out when I didn't step off the bus after the am kindergarten class.

I specifically remember riding the bus for the first time (6 years old). My mother embarrased me by taking pictures. I had a horrific hair cut too. Im pretty sure up until middle school, first days were a breeze. Thanks mom ;-)

Bubbling with excitement, I tugged on my first-day-of-school outfit, wolfed down some cheerios, grabbed my new backpack, and skipped outside just in time to see the bus pull away.

I was in grade one, saw my classmates' parents peering through the window, beaming at their children, and I wished my mama and papa were there too.

I don't remember my actual first day, but my aunt, who is only 5 years older than me, lived nearby and went to the same school. For my first year we walked to and from school together, so I felt safe.

I started the hurly-burly of life with joining a school in a town. I was made to comit tables by heart; the Head Mitress was a strict disciplinarian. She surprised me with her oration in both English and Malayalam. I was wondering how her head was carrying so much knowledge. This well before coming across Wordsworth's 'Village School Teacher!"

My first day at school I was afraid . When my teacher Ms. Jyothi asked my name I didn't utter a word. Had no idea what was happening around so many of them were crying, making noise . Then I saw my mother peeping through the window I started crying.

I remember entering the 1st grade classroom wearing my best dress with my mother at my side; there stood a girl who giggled at the sight of me – I giggled back and we were immediate and absolute best friends for the remainder of the years I attended that school.

I got to read out loud and sometimes have a sticker in return; books and stickers were two of my favorite things so I LOVED IT.
