Everyone should read Leaves of Grass! Reading Walt Whitman always makes me happy.
The Shakespeare play most representative of the 20th century? Important themes in King Lear: despair, insanity, "nothingness", death.

My favorite Sherlock Holmes story!
Also Conan Doyle's favorite Holmes story, according to a list published in The Strand in 1927.
Really interesting how Kafka treats Gregor Samsa's transformation into a huge bug. Has been very influential in the development of other literary styles: magical realism, etc.
My favorite Poe story - great storytelling technique, and completely horrifying and twisted.
Totally creepy, ha!
And important, in terms of ideas of mental health and feminism.
