Robin Hood - Robin Hood
This was a short, fun book that kept me company on the morning train these past few weeks. Each short chapter is a fireside tale unto itself. And in the back of your mind, you'll hear Robin's words in the voice of Errol Flynn.
Feedback - Forum spam
Two questions: 1) Is DailyLit concerned about the spam that appears in the forum; and 2) If so, how can I report spam?
Feedback - THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO
I was surprised to like The Count of Monte Cristo as much as I did. I've been recommending it to everyone.
Question of the Week - DailyLit is...
good company on the morning train.
Help - Pride and Prejudice: I just don't get it!
For me, Pride and Prejudice is kind of a romp - not serious but certainly entertaining. P&P was written as a sort of love letter to Austen's favorite sister, who was embodied in the character of Jane, the eldest Bennett girl. Jane is depicted as so sweet and kind - and later on, so well-married and enormously wealthy - she's almost unbelievable. Lizzy is obviously Jane Austen's own avatar, and so it seems to me Lizzy's personality is so endearingly flawed because Jane Austen enjoyed poking fun at herself.
Did you notice that over the course of the book, Mr. Darcy actually tries to improve his personality? Maybe I've been hanging out at the wrong end of DailyLit, but I rarely see a male lead really try and change for the better in order to win love.
Based on your critique of Pride and Prejudice, I think you might like Persuasion. The main characters are painted with a more careful hand.
The Count of Monte Cristo - The best book....a little odd ending (Spoilers alert)
I felt the same way. Frankly, I thought Mercedes's son would end up with the slave princess. He'd confessed his attraction for smart, exotic women; I thought that was foreshadowing.
The Count treated Mercedes with exquisite deference, but she wasn't awarded the full measure of reward that others (such as Morell & his family) got because once in her youth, her faith (in Dantes) failed. Maybe you have to be a) Catholic and b) an 18th c. French reader to think Mercedes's fate was just.
A Room with a View - Short, lyrical, and romantic - the perfect summer read
Is it wrong of me to have fallen in love with old Mr. Emerson rather than George? :-)
I read this book because I love the movie, yet I have always been dissatisfied with the characterization of Lucy. Her motives escaped me; she always seemed more peevish and spoiled than just "in a muddle." Happy to report the book explains well why she constantly pursues self-deception and denial. It stems in part from the early influence of her spinster cousin Charlotte, and in part (I believe) from the Edwardian period itself, when English women were just coming into their autonomy. It's a good read; hope you like it.

The Count of Monte Cristo - A surprise favorite
I started this book with low expectations, but now I count it among my favorite pieces of literature. I was delighted with the meticulous care that Dumas put into the story line, as well as his keen psychological observations and lyrical descriptions. Finished July 2010

Question of the Week - Mini-Courses on DailyLit?
I would definitely subscribe. In fact, I've been keeping an eye out for German language lessons on DailyLit. I would also like to see short courses in analytical writing.
