Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm - Our Family Forum

Today was 71 of 89 for me. Remember that I only get emails Mon-Fri. I should be reading my last section on May 19th.

Can you imagine not being able to access the library of fiction? It makes me sad to think of it! But I’m cheered when I think of all you...MY roses of joy!

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm - Our Family Forum

Poor Rebecca has lost her family of bloggers, or so it seems. Perhaps Miss Maxwell and Adam Ladd can come up with a fairy godmother for the Family Forum. I know Grandma Jan, Aunt Shellie and Addie love Rebecca too much to give up,so, maybe a little fairy dust will help. Okay, it's really sand from the beach in Cabo--consider yourselves sprinkled...

I been reading about Kate Douglas Wiggin (Rebecca's author) who led a fascinating life. She was the founder of the first public kindergarten west of the Rocky Mountains, and worked tirelessly for many years to promote the movement to establish public kindergartens. My kinda gal!

Maybe we should tell Aunt Chea about all the recent bible verses and praying. It could sway her to give Rebecca a second chance! What do you say Aunt Chea? "Jesus shall reign where'er the sun."

Everyone needs a Mr. Cobb! Mine is my friend Sue C.—he has often saved me from foolishness and error!

Hey, Grandma Jan-- I may have teetered on the edge of the cliff now and again, but I have posted almost as much as Aunt Shell! Get after those grandchildren, and that other daughter of yours who doesn't like poor Rebecca. Who doesn't like Rebecca--it's unthinkable!

As far as voting on the poem...are you talking about the poem from a long time ago? I don’t recall what section that’s in. Will you remind us so we can look back without searching all of the sections?

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm - Our Family Forum

I’ve decided that I’m starting a document of the words and phrases I love in this book. Every time I read a section I find phrases I’m keen on and want to remember. Here are two from this past week. 1.) choice conundrums 2.)spasms of bravery

Shellie—you had mentioned sharing words we didn’t know and looked up. Here is one I recently had to fine the meaning of: doggerel— is a derogatory term for verse considered of little literary value. The word probably derived from dog, suggesting either ugliness, or unpalatability (as in food fit only for dogs).[1] There are popular forms which are in themselves essentially prescriptions for doggerel, including the limerick, double dactyl and sonnet. [I’m sure Grandma Jan will have something to say about that definition. Just remember, I looked it up and didn’t make it up!]

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm - Our Family Forum

“There were many hard-working people among the inhabitants, but life wore away so quietly and slowly that there was a good deal of spare time for conversation,-- under the trees at noon in the hayfield; hanging over the bridge at nightfall; seated about the stove in the village store of an evening. These meeting-places furnished ample ground for the discussion of current events as viewed by the mas- culine eye, while choir rehearsals, sewing societies, reading circles, church picnics, and the like, gave opportunity for the expression of feminine opinion.”

After reading this I thought, “How lovely—life today is so different! Then I read on and I wasn’t too sure I'd have wanted that life either.

...the (remove-Simpson & insert Langton) house looked, to quote a Riverboro expression, "as if the devil had been having an auction in it."—that’s all I have to say!

Except that Angus Pangus came for a visit while TJ and Bradley went down south on a little trip—oolala—you can all have your doggies gang! I love’em, but ... lengthy visits make me into Aunt Mirandy, it's not pretty!

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm - Our Family Forum

Poor Rebecca! I’ve been recipient of “the look” in my younger years, and more recently, the giver of such a look—how will Rebecca endure? Morgan? Katie? Chea? TJ? Brook or Addie? Do you kids have any thoughts? Thanks goodness I don’t know any Aunts that behave like that! ;-D

Hey....who says you “can't climb so high, or go so far, or stay out so late, or run so fast, or anything." Let’s do it—the Big Nasty, here we come! Rebecca would support us in this.

I’m thinking the phrase. “mind into complete oblivion” might come in handy in the near future!

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm - Our Family Forum

Setting up the Family Forum and getting the DAILYLIT emails is easy. Getting everyone in our family on the same page at the same time—well, it’s like herding cats! We’re getting very close to the starting line though. I expect to commence our reading soon—MEOW!

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm - Our Family Forum

Welcome to “Our Family Forum”—a place for our family to connect and discuss great books. We believe in the power of great literature, but mostly, we just love to read. Or … we were hoodwinked into this under the pretext of family harmony, and we fell for it!

This is the first book we are reading together on DailyLit. We are reading Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm because I (Auntie UtahHAL) put out a list of possibilities and Rebecca captured everyone’s heart. They could all relate to difficult family situations, and especially bad-tempered, irritable Aunts that are used to getting their way.

Let’s get started…is everybody ready?
