He watches the garbage truck as it chews big black bags away.

The dishwasher’s hollow hum tortured him with regret. Meat was expensive; he lost his job months ago. But remembering his daughter’s radiant smile after the succulent spaghetti-Bolognese-dinner soothed his conscience. Wouldn’t any other desperate father kill a kitten to cook his offspring’s badly missed favorite dish? Such is life.
