Maggie: A Girl of the Streets - American Social Realism

I read this book years ago, and found the ending to be anything but lacking in sentimentality. In fact, I found it to be melodramatic in the extreme. One of my favorite professors in college insisted that we read it, but I have to say I didn't get the point.

My Antonia - My Antonia

I've only read the first two sections, but it's reminding me of the spare writing of "Death Comes to the Archbishop". It's a perfect example of "more is less".

My Antonia - My Antonia - just starting

One of my favorite books is "Death Comes to the Archbishop", also by Willa Cather, but set in a very different time and place. What I love about her writing is that she can give us a window into the lives of her characters like no one else can. I look forward to becoming intimately familiar with these characters and with the land as well.
