You're Only as Sick as Your Secrets - Snappy short detective tale
An excellent short story featuring an insightful detective, a bit of Beatles trivia, and a mystery that's delivered and solved with style I'll definitely be looking for more of the author's work here. A great coffee-break read.
The Picture of Dorian Gray - A frightening tale
The most frightening part of this novel is the insight into the human condition it provides, how being unfettered by guilt leads to the complete corruption of the title character. The mouthpiece character Lord Henry beginning the novel with some of Wilde's most-often quoted epigrams, seemingly harmless enough at first but starting Dorian Gray on his spiral to the depths. A dark and sinister tale; perhaps the darkest element is the portrait of the upper classes it gives us, not just Dorian's.
Secret Adversary - A great introduction to Christie
A fast-paced read, targeted at young adult readers, this is a great way for newcomers to Agatha Christie's works to get started. Yes, the plot is perhaps a little too full of 'convenient' coincidences, but nonetheless it's a book spiced with Christie's flavor for straight-to-the-point narrative and of course the obligatory sting in the tail. You'll probably figure out the mystery halfway through; there are plenty of clues in there, but, just when you think you've got it... well, give it a go. The best recommendation I can make is after reading this, you'll want more.
