Etc. - Buttonhole books, question? What's your?
NPR had a great segment on what they called 'buttonhole books...those special books that one reads that you just can't wait to tell someone..anyone..EVERYONE that they just have to read it..
You know, the book that you never wanted to end, and will never forget...
and if you are very fortunate, you might have more than one...
We all have at least one title that comes to mind without a moment's hesitation ...
I'd like to hear about everyone's special 'buttonhole books' ???
by the way, I tried to post this topic earlier and ended up in 'the help section'..forgive me..
I'm trying again because I think this website is special and all my fellow book lovers are as well...hope to hear from you...

Etc. - "Buttonhole books" Everyone has at least one
Hi, Edith:
I wish I knew how to get this in the right forum....thanks for replying ....no...actually The Secret Garden on NPR was also picked by several that authors that were asked for their buttonhole books.....and my friend suggested that everyone should read it....
This woman is in her 70's now and reads so many books and has all her life....for those three books to be her most memorable of all time...her buttonhole books ...I think it's wonderful that they were that special to her.
It's not the books that you have to think about....it's the special one or ones...that come first to mind....and I do believe that we all have at least one...
So what's yours?
The Count of Monte Cristo - The Sweet Taste
Edith:...HELP
I need help! I tried to make a list of the books that I have read and rate them as you did yours...what am I doing wrong...
Second: I wanted to start a topic...about 'buttonhole books'
it said 'start a new topic'....well, somehow my topic is in the Help section !!!....
Which obviously!
What do I do now with the topic I wanted to start? and what am I doing wrong with how I am entering my books?
I'd appreciate your help...I thought for a new topic...buttonhole books..would be interesting....
maybe for the question section..any where but in Help...
good grief.

NPR recently had a great segment on what they called 'buttonhole books' ..We have all read them...those precious few special books that we can't wait to tell someone they simply MUST read ...
That book, or if one is very lucky the special books that one never forgets...and instantly come to mind as you read this.
My fifth grade teacher long retired now, a life long book lover, who passed her love of reading on to me..also became a dear life time friend...She reads several books a month..
When I asked her what her buttonhole books were....she didn't hesitate ...
The Secret Garden
Anne Of Green Gables
The Robe
I would love to know your buttonhole books?
This Side of Paradise - still searching for his Magnificense ...a small taste found
fredsmilel:
I have finished The Great Gatsby, and may be done with F. Scott as well...
What's so great about The Great Gatsby?? I get it. F. Scott can write beautiful 'prose' but when I chose to read a fictional novel..I'm looking for a story..characters to know and learn about to have feelings for them one way or the other, this is not possible in Gatsby..no depth
he can write forever describing one magnificent sunset after another...
Sometimes I think we are so often told that something is 'great' that we are supposed to see it's greatest whether we truly enjoyed it or not...
I do see his talent with words..
The Count of Monte Cristo - The Sweet Taste
I have often thought of reading this classic story and don't know why I always end up putting it off... after reading your comments about The Count Of Monte Cristo...
I am moving it up on my must reads...
House of Mirth - Miss Lilly Bart
Edith Wharton has the ability to create truly unforgettable characters...Miss Lilly Bart, is one of them.
I love Edith Wharton's sharp wit...her profound insights about human nature,..how cruel we can be to one another!
I was saddened and not a little disappointed by the ending to The House Of Mirth...I expected better, and feel Lilly Bart deserved more.
The Magnificent Ambersons - Excellent Reading
Hi,Joe:
I enjoyed The Magnificent Ambersons but the main character's 1/80 change was a little hard for me to believe....
I am really writing to you because you are reading The Beautiful And The Damned and I am VERY interested in learning how you feel about this story...particularly 'the ending'....please do let me know....
I've just finished This Side Of Paradise and begun The Great Gatsby ...
Happy Reading...
Amber.
This Side of Paradise - still searching for his Magnificense ...a small taste found
While disappointed in two other stories I have read so far by F. Scott...I want to stay the course, and discover the wonders to be found in his works...
I have begun to discover his talents .. in This Side Of Paradise...
I want a story where one can't wait to find out what's going to happen next...the kind of book in which one cares about the characters and never wants to let their stories go....almost dreading getting close to the end...yet, not being able to stop one's self from rushing on nonetheless...
That wasn't the case for me with this book...but I was taken with this young man's amazing abilities with a first novel and at such a young age to boot!
There is a touching line near it's end...where F. Scott writes that he hoped that a hundred years into the future...those reading his words would wonder if his eyes were brown or blue....Mr. F. Scott...I do believe your wish has been granted...
I'm on to The Great Gatsby ...
The Beautiful and Damned - Paradise not found in reading this book!
I found the story depressing and not all that interesting but determined to stick with it...one hears so many raves about how great the story is...I can only wonder...why?
And then the ending! I feel cheated..the implausible ending...is there some deeper meaning to it? Other than it simply does NOT make any sense whatsoever?...I'd love to hear what that ending meant to others who may have shared in the 'joy' of reading this book.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Benjamin Button 'much ado about nothing' for me
Disappointing....interesting idea...didn't enjoy the story at all
Jane Eyre - One of the BEST
I've just signed up...all confused about how to post....list the books I've read and want to read...ect.
just finished This Side Of Paradise by F. Scott
Would LOVE to know if anyone has read The Beautiful And The Damned by F. Scott?
That ending! It was a depressing story and I felt disappointed in the ending....it was implausible...made no sense and would like to know if I am missing out on some deepr and 'very obscure' meaning to that ending which I am apparently just not sharp enough to figure out?
I need help Edith....since she's one of my all time favorite authors...I'm drawn to your name for some advice?
Amber.
Jane Eyre - One of the BEST
Hi, Edith:
Really enjoyed reading your comments....I feel the same about Jane Eyre....one of those all time 'rare' never forget favorites of mine.
I'm a big fan of Edith Wharton, House Of Mirth...though the ending was a bit disappointing for me.
Would love to know if you have read it and your thoughts?
