Three Men in a Boat - Loved the humor
Loved the humor and the word play, but the diversions and asides got a bit tiresome. The traveling up and down the Thames in a small boat in the 1880s, though interesting, would be a bit different today.
Humor reminded me of [author:P.G. Wodehouse|7963], who was born 22 years after Jerome.
Happiness Quotations - So So
I always enjoy quotes and sayings but these didn't live up to the billing.
The Idiot - Russian Literature Romp
Enjoying my romp through Russian literature having read Crime and Punishment prior to this and next is Demons, reading along with Dennis Abrams and the Project D Blog. Managed to keep up with the reading, although didn't do well at posting my share of comments. Demons looks long but very promising.
Crime and Punishment - Psychological and Dramatic
A psychological and dramatic Russian classic which I read as the first of four Dostoyevsky books along with an online blog, Project D. The daily blog posts kept me reading at a steady pace and added critique and commentary as we went along. Although this was not nearly as difficult a read as Proust, which this same group did in 2010, I still found it helpful and more interesting to be part of the group read. Next week we'll begin The Idiot.
Boswell's Life of Johnson - Worth Reading
Couldn't seem to focus on this although parts of it I really liked, other parts not so much. Because it was abridged? Because I read it over four months in short doses through DailyLit.com? My favorite quote is "BOSWELL. 'Is not the Giant's-Causeway worth seeing?' JOHNSON. 'Worth seeing? yes; but not worth going to see.'" This describes my recent inclination NOT to go places.
Famous Stories Every Child Should Know - Short Stories from Another Era
A collection of eleven stories published in the early 1900s provide examples of what literature was deemed appropriate and morally uplifting for children of that era. Although several stories are by "classic" authors such as Dickens and Hawthorne others are lesser known. My favorite was #9, "The Nürnberg Stove" by Louise dela Rameé. Not recommended for the child of today.
The Lady with the Dog and Other Stories - Chekhov: Master of the short story
Chekhov is a master of the short story and I thoroughly enjoyed the DailyLit.Com version* of this classic which contained nine stories, the best known being the title story but my favorites being the two shortest, The Head of the Family about a man who alternates between being tyrannical and guilty and The Husband which has a great example of Chekhov's pithy character descriptions: "Among the husbands was Shalikov, the tax-collector--a narrow, spiteful soul, given to drink, with a big, closely cropped head, and thick, protruding lips." DailyLit is a great way to read short stories online and this makes the 28th book I have finished through DailyLit since I joined in 2009.
Leaves of Grass - Oh Joy! Oh Thrill! I'm done! done! done!
In the celebratory style of Whitman: Oh Joy! Oh Thrill! I'm done! done! done! 423 poems, 15 months and finally finally done! Read this a "Poem a day" from DailyLit.com -- some thoughtful, others boring, some short, others too wordy. I would have given up except they kept arriving in my inbox and weren't difficult to read through. Realized about 90% through that I should have been reading more about Whitman and seeking critiques, etc. which would have added to the experience and probably would have raised the rating.
Dead Souls - Finished the Unfinished
Finished this "unfinished" Russian classic even if the author didn't. The nature of the book, Chichikov travels the 1800s Russian countryside "buying" ownership of dead serfs and meeting a wide assortment of people, lent itself well to reading through DailyLit.com Not exactly a road-trip book but Chichikov does travel and offers insights: "I am travelling on my own account as well, in that, in addition to possible benefit to my health, I desire to see the world and the whirligig of humanity, which constitute, to so speak, a living book, a second course of education."
Metamorphoses Volume I - Fascinating, Complex and Confusing
Think I must have a mental block when it comes to mythology. I find it fascinating and enjoy the reading but nothing sticks. Like reading about a thousand interrelated but very short stories. Glad I made the effort but not sure of the actual value achieved. Maybe I'd appreciate it more if I had to translate it from the Latin?
Little Dorrit - Great Read!
Stephen King: 7 Great Books for Summer: "His most sentimental, absorbing, delightful novel...and yes, you will like it. Dorrit is as easy to read as any current best-seller, and more rewarding than most. Also, it explains the whole Bernard Madoff mess. If I'm lyin', I'm dyin'." Seven months and 418 emails later, finished reading this through DailyLit.com. Dickens is perfect for reading in installments. Which one should I try next?
Right Ho, Jeeves - Light, easy and fun reading
Light, easy and fun reading – this is the first actual novel I've read about Jeeves, previous ones, The Man with Two Left Feet and My Man Jeeves, have been short stories. In contrast this seemed much longer than necessary, but the humor saved the day and made it worth reading. DailyLit.com is a great way to read in small doses, otherwise I might have skimmed to the end shortly after the beginning. Perhaps enough Wodehouse and Jeeves for awhile, I'll look for some alternative for a daily dose of some other author.
My Man Jeeves - Humorous Stories
Humorous stories/anecdotes, not always containing Jeeves and his master – Bertie Wooster, many take place in NYC. My second Wodehouse to read through DailyLit.com. Stories blur together but humor is enjoyable; Jeeves is always cool-headed and poised and I keep reading.
Grammar Devotional - Not that great
Mostly things I already knew, included some interactive type things like "click here for the correct answer" and then the link wouldn't work, or it would link to something irrelevant.
The Man with Two Left Feet and Other Stories - Humor and romance
Short stories -- humorous and romantic -- that entertained and made me laugh. Especially liked Henry in the title story, who's idea of fun reading for personal improvement is going through the encyclopedia page by page and taking notes about the articles. I can understand the appeal. "Extricating Young Gussie" introduces Jeeves, Bertie [although this is possibly a different Bertie] and Aunt Agatha.
Another good read from DailyLit!
The Four Pools Mystery - Southern Mystery
A mystery involving "haints" and suspicious characters, set in the south (Virginia?) during Victorian times. A different genre from the four other Webster books I've read in which humor was the main ingredient. Daddy Long Legs remains my favorite.
Jerry - Read other Jean Webster titles first
Not the best of Jean Webster's titles, but still a humorous old-fashioned romance.
Grammar Devotional - Day 5
I have the same problem with Day 19. Sorry, MaggieH, didn't see your message until now and Day 5 has been trashed too long. Hopefully it has been fixed! Would there have been a way I'd know you had sent me a message?
3 Short Reads by Edgar Allan Poe - Classic Poe
Classic Poe -- creepy, of course, but less so as I age.
Heart of Darkness - Trip up the Congo River anyone?
Conde Nast Traveler top 69 fiction travel books. That would be traveling up the Congo River during a time period when that would be quite a dangerous thing to do. Still, a "classic" book, and an interesting look at colonialism at it's worst (best?) and how one Kurtz was first deified and then destroyed, as well as how it affected Marlowe.
Masters of Verse - Poem-a-Day
Includes a few well known as well as lesser known poems from classic poets -- good sampling of poetry. DailyLit.com is a good way to get a poem a day.
The Adventure of the Speckled Band - Sherlock Holmes at his best
Great reminder of the joy of reading Arthur Conan Doyle and "seeing" Sherlock Holmes solve a mysterious case involving, gypsies, murder, love and marriage.
Wikipedia Tour: The Grand Tour - Wide variety of articles
Impressive array of articles from Wikipedia -- some of more interest than others.
Poems Every Child Should Know - Poetry from pre-1900
These are poems that children might have been familiar with (and/or learned for recitation) in the early 1900's. Most of the authors were familiar to me but very few of the poems did I hear in school, even 50 years ago. Good overview of poetry -- especially poems for boys up to that time.
Daddy Long Legs - Good read epistolary style
Epistolary style made for a good format for segmented reading. A bit sappy, in the nature of early 20th century, stories for teens, but still a good read. Reminded me of Gene Stratton-Porter's A Girl of the Limberlost.
Dear Enemy - Highly recommended epistolary old-fashioned novel.
This is a sequel/companion book to Daddy Long Legs which I recently finished and enjoyed. Both books are epistolary novels and are an excellent format to read through DailyLit.com. Published in the early 1900s, Webster writes of the hopes and dreams of "modern" women who have gone to college and want to have careers. Highly recommended if you like old-fashioned novels.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Less spooky with aging?
A quick read through DailyLit.com -- not as spooky as I remember. I'll have to hunt up a copy to look at the Rackham illustrations.
When Patty Went to College - Humorous academic and social anecdotes
Patty's adventures in college reflect the social mores and humor of early 1900's. Made me think of what college might have been like for my grandmother if she had received the opportunity.
Fetching Raymond - Great story!
Wish the whole book had been available! I'm now on the waiting list at the library for the "rest of the stories". Normally don't read short stories but DailyLit.com would be a good incentive to add more of them to my reading.
Grammar Devotional - Day 5
I think it's fixed incorrectly. As when I click on the link to get the question, I get the answer instead and don't see any other link back or to the question.
Dear Enemy - Companion Book...
I actually liked this better than Daddy-Long-Legs as the ending didn't seem quite so obvious although it certainly wasn't unexpected. I like the "modern" woman of the early 1900s and especially enjyed the epistolary nature of the book, making it a perfect choice for reading on DailyLit.
The Adventures of Roderick Random - (Almost) Endless Missdventures
Six years of troubles and tribulations with a hard to believe happy ending.
The Moonstone - Great read!
Lots of cliff hangers made this a perfect choice to read through DailyLit.com
The Woman in White - Great Read!
Suspenseful to the end. Originally written to be serialized makes this perfect to read through DailyLit.
The Mysterious Affair at Styles - Classic Christie
Great introduction to Christie. On the "1000 Novels everyone must read" list.
